Charlevoix Main Street DDA is partnering with the Recreation Department and Visit Charlevoix to request permission to apply for a Charlevoix County Community Foundation grant to support “winter vibrancy” initiatives. The requested amount will be $10,000 with required matching funds being split between the partnering entities. A variety of ideas are being explored to add more passive activity to our public spaces during the winter months (sledding, warming stations, etc.). In a recent meeting with the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, out of all the ideas that were presented, this was the one they were most enthusiastic about and encouraged us to apply.

Information has been gathered in recent surveys between the DDA and Recreation Departments that support the public's desire for these types of enhancements. Funding will support programs that already exist, including candlelit hikes at Mt. McSauba and the First Fridays promotion, which will be enhanced in comparison to the spring 2021 events because of the grant funding. A large portion of the funds will be used for marketing and promotion to continue working toward improving regional perceptions about Charlevoix in the winter, highlighting the open businesses, events, and activities that can be enjoyed year round.

Enhancement ideas include creating warming stations in alleys during First Friday events, enhancing First Fridays to also include a Cocktail Trail encouraging patrons to go into the restaurants and bars, and BOGO promotions with the Downtown Dollars e-Gift Cards to encourage more local spending. Additionally, the creation of a sled library for passive enjoyment of all ages (weather permitting) in East Park, would be an addition to add activity and vibrancy downtown.
